Preventive Maintenance Guide for Pallet Wrappers

A pallet wrapping machine is no different than any other piece of industrial equipment. It requires regular maintenance to ensure lasting performance and reduce downtime due to mechanical failure. It also helps prevent operational errors that can lead to damaged goods.


Alternatives to unscheduled service can be quite costly - along with technicians coming out to repair/clean/replace damaged parts, the average service call can cost up to $1,000 for repairs and parts, which can result in days to weeks of machine downtime. Preparation

First things first, unplug the wasp machine from the electrical outlet and remove all debris from around and under the pallet wrapper. Over time, stretch film sheets, wood chips from the pallet and trash will eventually make their way inside and under the machine. Loose material and mechanical moving parts do not mix well.


A visual inspection

After clearing away any loose debris, perform a visual inspection of the automatic pallet wrapping machine. Are there any obvious signs of damage to mechanical parts or cables? If so, mark it and call service immediately.

Look at the rollers and other moving parts. Strands of shrink wrap waste can wrap around them and cause the bearings and wasp machine to pull tight as it runs. This can lead to blown fuses and shortened motor life.

Clean the Sensors

Dirty photocells and sensors can lead to improperly packaged goods, which can damage the product or cause spills during shipping. Take a damp cloth and gently wipe it down, then remove any dirt buildup. Remember to clean the pallet wrapping turntable.

Pro Tip: Avoid using harsh chemicals or cleaners as they may damage or blur the glass/plastic sensor housing unit.


Drive Maintenance

The drive system on the stretch wrapper can use belts, chains or a combination of both. Refer to the user manual and use the proper lubricant to ensure smooth and reliable operation. Avoid over-lubrication, as over time it can cause dirt to build up in other areas.

Pro Tip: If you don't have a spare belt or chain and your current one is running well, now is a good time to order a replacement part. It will save you a lot of time and money when you need to replace it.


Perform A Test

Avoid using non-recommended products as they may not have the correct formulation to ensure consistent performance and long life. After completing a thorough cleaning, visual inspection and lubrication, have one of the workers load the pallet and run the packing cycle. Listen carefully for any unusual noises that may indicate a problem.
